You’ve finally found an apartment in your dream NYC location, there’s just one problem – it’s a bit, well, small. Don’t worry, you don’t need to move, you just need to spruce the room up a little. Here are a few suggestions to make your apartment feel larger than it actually is.

Keep it Light
  • Use light colors on the walls and floors. Softer hues make a cramped room feel bigger and brighter.

Hang a Mirror
  • Place a mirror opposite a window so that it bounces light around the room. Hint: the bigger the mirror, the airier the space.

Blend In
  • Buy some furniture the same color as your walls so it blends in and widens the space.

Open Wide
  • Leave your windows uncovered. This creates a sense of depth in what would otherwise be a small space.

Make It a Large
  • Big pieces of art can add drama to a small space. Large furniture that takes up the entire room with custom shelves and décor around it adds a BIG creative element.

Corners Are Your Friends
  • Corners are often forgotten about, but they are a great area to tuck away a corner shelf, table or accent chair.

See it Through
  • Don’t use heavy pieces like wood tables, opt for glass. Or something with an open metal base. See-through takes up less visual space.

Cover Your Ceilings
  • Yep, that’s right. Cover your ceilings with wallpaper or anything that draws the eye upward. Keep it light and airy to make use of a space that’s often forgotten.

Surprise Storage
  • All rooms get cluttered, but small rooms with clutter make the room a lot tinier than it already is. Choose furniture with space to store objects like benches with bins and bed sets with shelves and drawers.

Utilize the Floor Space
  • Why press your furniture to the walls when you have tons of floor space? A few inches between the wall and back of your couch or bed will make the room more open.

Other ideas: add stripes, tie in some greenery, and hang curtains up higher than your windows.

There are so many unique ways to create a spacious atmosphere out of something small. All you have to do is use your imagination and don’t be scared to get creative. Your dream apartment is what you make it – no matter how small.
