Lower East Side

The Lower East Side was originally an immigrant and working class neighborhood. Historically, the Lower East Side has been home to radical groups, such as anarchists or the squatter movement, and was a breeding ground for Punk Rock in the 1980’s. Today, the gentrified neighborhood, delineated as south of East 14th Street, north of Fulton Street, east of Broadway, and west of the East River, is a haven for young professionals and artists seeking affordable apartments. Upscale clothing stores, underground musical venues, trendy boutiques, and ethnically diverse restaurants are now interspersed with quaint cafes and shops. Refurbished lofts and duplexes, as well as turn of the century walk-up buildings, are common, attracting a wide array of residents who want to be in the midst of edgy nightlife and diversity.
